Ad Rank
Ad Rank determines whether your ad shows and in what position on the search results page. Google calculates it at each auction using your bid, your Quality Score components, the context of the search, and the expected impact of ad extensions and formats. A higher Ad Rank wins a better position.
Why It Matters
Ad Rank is the actual mechanism that decides placement, so understanding it clarifies that position is not bought by bid alone. Improving relevance and extensions can win better positions without simply raising bids.
Common Mistake
Assuming the highest bidder always wins the top spot. A competitor with lower bids but stronger Quality Score and extensions can outrank you, so pouring money into bids alone often underperforms.
