Direct Traffic
Visits where analytics cannot determine a referring source, so it attributes them to Direct. This includes users typing your URL, using bookmarks, or clicking links in apps and documents that strip referrer data. It is effectively the catch-all bucket for untraceable arrivals.
Why It Matters
A large or growing Direct segment often hides misattributed campaign traffic, meaning your real channels are underreported. Auditing Direct helps you recover credit for paid, email, and social efforts that were losing their tags.
Common Mistake
Treating all Direct as loyal brand visitors. Much of it is untagged links, HTTPS-to-HTTP referrer loss, or dark social, so it deserves investigation rather than a pat on the back.
