How-To Schema

How-To schema is structured data markup that labels the steps, tools, and materials in a set of instructions so search engines can read them as a procedure. Applied to tutorial or process content, it tells engines the page contains an ordered, step-by-step guide.

Why It Matters

It helps search engines and AI understand instructional content as a clear procedure, improving how steps are parsed, presented, and cited. Well-marked how-to content is easier for answer engines to lift into direct responses.

Common Mistake

Adding How-To markup that does not match the visible on-page steps, or using it on content that is not genuinely instructional. Mismatched or misapplied schema can be ignored or flagged rather than rewarded.
