AI Overviews
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many search results, synthesizing information from multiple web pages and linking to some sources. Powered by Google's generative models, they answer a query directly on the results page, often before the traditional blue links, and cite a handful of supporting sites.
Why It Matters
AI Overviews occupy prime real estate above organic results and can absorb clicks that once went to ranked pages. Being cited as a source preserves visibility, while being ignored can cut traffic even for pages that still rank on page one.
Common Mistake
Optimizing only for the classic top-ranking position while ignoring whether content is structured for extraction. Pages that rank well can still be left out of an AI Overview if the relevant answer is buried or ambiguous.
