Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is a score that estimates how hard it is to rank on the first page for a term, based on the authority and relevance of the pages already ranking. Most tools express it from 0 to 100.

Why It Matters

It keeps strategy realistic. A young or mid-authority site that targets only high-difficulty terms will wait months for movement, while mixing in attainable terms produces early wins that build authority and momentum.

Common Mistake

Treating the score as absolute. Difficulty is relative to your own site's authority and topical relevance, so a term rated hard for the market may be very winnable for a site with a strong topic cluster around it.
